Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, proposed yesterday that universities should be made to favour promising state school applicants over private school applicants, even if the latter had better grades, as a remedy for the lack of social mobility in Britain.
In response, Dr Tim Hands, Master of Magdalen College School in Oxford, described the plan as an ‘old-style communist creation of a closed market’ which would be a betrayal by 'privileged politicians' of the 'many parents (who) make huge sacrifices in order to get the best possible education for their children.'
